Project Details
Ever since the first Central-Phoenix/East Valley (CP-EV) Light Rail construction projects began in 2004, Valley Metro Rail (VMR) has continued to grow and extend the system throughout the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan Area. With 28 miles already constructed and operational as of 2020, the two most recent VMR extension projects are the South Central Extension (~5.5 miles) and the Northwest Extension, Phase II (~1.6 miles), both located within the COP. Collectively, these light rail projects include major surface street improvements and realignments, revised roadway signalization, utility relocations, storm drain systems, concrete rail guideway and track sections, bridges, train stations and stops, power systems, train communication systems, and parking facilities. These projects involved a combination of VMR, COP, MAG, and ADOT standards and requirements. Because of the significant impact that projects of this size and scope can have on existing streets, utilities, and traffic congestion, the City chose to participate directly in the project compliance evaluation and acceptance process. To appropriately cover this volume or work, the City has contracted with multiple materials testing and inspection consultants for assistance.
